- ELMINA CASTLE IN CAPE COAST
The castle was built in 1482 to provide a defence against other Europeans attempting to establish trading businesses on the Gold Coast (Ghana’s former name). The castle which is two hour’s drive from Accra is one of the oldest European buildings outside Europe has been declared a national monument by UNESCO. Inside the castle is a shrine dedicated to the memory of all who were forced into slavery at Cape Coast Castle.
The Kakum National Park located in the Central Region is Ghana’s most famous park. Established in 1990 it extends over 350 sq km. Here you will find jungle elephants, jungle boars, monkeys etc. The most popular tourist attraction is the canopy walkway made of old hardwood trees that takes you to a height of 30 meters above the rainforest. The suspended walkway gives an exhilarating rainforest experience as you get to see a panoramic view of the rainforest. This is definitely not for the faint hearted.
